As everyone knows that Ischemic stroke is very dangerous; it can lead to either dead or paralysis for the entire life. Ischemic stroke is the leading cause of death in Thailand. However, at present, there are various treatment options for the treatment.
Angiography is the interventional radiology which is more accurate than Coronary CT Angiography. Moreover, it can be a treatment option for those who cannot undergo surgery or have a higher risk of having surgery. For instances, senior patients, lung patients or patients who are suspected of having an anesthesia’s adverse reaction. We call this procedure “vascular intervention” it can be performed with vascular all over body.
Cerebral Angiogram is the procedure that the doctor uses for examining blood vessels for abnormalities by inserting catheter into an artery in the groin and an injection of contrast material. The image has been captured digitally on screen. The abnormality will be healed.
How stroke can be treated by “Interventional Radiology Treatment”?
There are 3 types of stroke: Ischemic stroke, thrombotic stroke, and hemorrhagic stroke. In case of Thrombotic stroke, the doctor will place the stent to expand the narrowed artery to restore the cerebral blood flow.
It will be 2 levels of blockage in case the brain is blocked by blood clot. If the blood clot is still fresh, it tends to be dissolved easily. The doctor will insert the catheter and inject rt-PA in the therapeutic target. In such case, a small amount of drug will be delivered to minimize the possible complication and decrease the duration that the drug travels through the artery. The more amount of drug use, the more complication can arise. However, if the blood clot is formed quite a long time or giving intravenous rt-PA does not make the condition better. The doctor will remove the blood clot by clot retrieval .The surgeon have only 4-5 hours to retrieve the blood clot.
For the hemorrhagic stroke, the doctor will consider its severity. If the surgery is not required, the surgeon just applies the stent to the target aneurysm.
Risk of Interventional Radiology Treatment
The risk of interventional radiology treatment depends on the patient’s condition. The first risk is from the current disease, later is the equipment even it is a single use. The success of Interventional radiology treatment depends upon the readiness and expertise of the doctor, nursing staff and all staff.
All in all, cerebral angiogram treatment has many benefits such as, minimal pain, minimal blood loss, fast recovery period and good clinical outcome.
