Scarless Laparoscopic Gynecologic Surgery

Generally, the Laparoscopic Gynecologic Surgery will leave 3-4 incisions which are 0.5- 1.2 cms. in length below the umbilicus, its size depends upon the size of lens used in the surgery and   also 2-3 incisions at the bikini line. However, the new single port surgery will leave only a single 1.2 -1.5 cms. incision only.  The single port laparoscopic surgery is the medical technology that has been introduced since 10 -15 years already but it is not much preferred by the surgeons since it is quite difficult and most of cases are not suitable. The surgeon requires their own special technique and appropriate medical equipment.

To improve healthcare in Thailand to reach internationally accepted standards, Dr. Kitti Tuchinda, the specialist in Laparoscopic Gynecologic Surgery, Phyathai 2 Hospital has designed and developed the innovative Single Port Platform called Kitti Port by cooperating with medical equipment company in Japan equipment according to international standard which allows laparoscopic procedure significantly easier.

Dr. Kitti performed this innovative surgical technique to more than 80 patients.   Dr. Kitti, Kitti port patent’s owner, found that more than 90% of Laparoscopic Gynecologic Surgery can efficiently use a Single Port Platform. “If the patient has myoma uteri and does not want to keep the uterus, more than 90% of such cases can undergo scarless transvaginal hysterectomy. However, if the patient still wants to keep the uterus, single port surgery can be carried out. In addition, single port surgery can be used with other gynecologic surgeries. For instances, ovarian cystectomy. Intrauterine Adhesions Surgery, Salpingectomy or even Appendectomy.

Advantages
1. Only 1 incision left in the surgical site, the patient postoperative pain is less.
2. Only a small incision at the umbilicus, the wound then will be completely healed after five weeks of the surgery which gives the scarless appearances.

Limitation
In difficult or complicated cases like when the tumor found is over 8 cm., the patient has undergone multiple surgeries or if the adhesions are extensive, the patient may not be able to perform either single port laparoscopic or conventional laparoscopic surgery (through many cuts).  However, such cases have a chance of 5%-10% occurrence and if found, the surgeon might consider traditional open procedures or other suitable treatment options.

Recovery time
The patient usually requires 1-2 days hospital stay and after that she can rest at home and back to work within 1 week. The normal daily activities such as up or down stairs can be done as usual but should avoid lifting heavy objects for 2 weeks.
