Foot and Ankle Arthroscopy

Foot and Ankle Arthroscopy is the innovative treatment that has been continuously developed and nowadays arthroscopy procedure is common and become the standard treatment in many hospitals.  It is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that a fiber-optic camera and specialized instruments are inserted through small incisions to guide orthopedic surgeons to the correct position of foot and ankle, allowing a greater visibility of the joint and its surrounding issue.  This is unlike traditional surgical procedures that require a larger incision to get directly to the bones, and cause more damages to the tissue.

A foot ankle arthroscopy can be used to treat various injuries and disorders including:

1.To repair damaged cartilage
2.To remove bone spur, when joint cartilage begins to wear down, the joint may lose its normal shape, leading to the formation of spurs, which can restrict your movement capability. Previously, the surgeon makes a large incision, and the skin around the joint is cut to gain access to bony outgrowth which has to be removed.  Currently, two small incisions (7 millimeters) are made to insert surgical tools and a tiny camera to perform the removal.  After the surgery, the patient is usually able to walk within 2 weeks.
3.To repair the torn ligament through 6-7 small incisions, less scarring or less noticeable scar in term of cosmetic result.
4.For fracture repair, by putting a lighted tube with a tiny camera, it can help to ensure normal alignment of bone and cartilage; improving visibility as the surgeon might not view the problem area clearly from the x-ray.

To repair the fracture, the surgeon will first set the fracture bone into place, and held them together with plates, metal screws, pins, or rods through a small incision guided by an arthroscope. Foot and ankle arthroscopy can fix broken bones, ligament tears using tiny incisions to access the problem. With smaller opening, it reduces the risk of infection, and swelling with less damage to surrounding skin, ligaments and tendons; the recovery time is also shorter than traditional surgery.
