Melanoma

Melanoma is the most dangerous of skin cancer, if treated early, it is usually curable, but if it is already spread to other parts of the body, it will become difficult to treat and can be fatal. In women, melanoma tends to develop on the legs, while it occurs on the chest and the back of men.

Ultraviolet light is one main factor that causes Melanoma. This includes natural sunlight, sunbeds or sunlamps. However, some other factors also increase the risk of developing Melanoma.

Moles – if you have more moles, your risk is higher.

Skin type – people having fair skin, red or fair hair with a lot of freckles seems to be more sensitive to the sun.

A low immunity

A family history of melanoma – Approximately 10% of all people with melanoma have a family history of the disease.

Symptoms

You should visit the doctor if a mole gets bigger, change in shape or in color. The mole becomes itching, painful or look inflamed. In addition, a dark area under a nail which is bigger and not result from an injury can be a sign of melanoma.

Diagnostic test

Skin exam – moles or other pigmented areas that look abnormal in color, size, shape or texture will be tested by a doctor to detect melanoma.

Biopsy – the abnormal tissue may be removed to check for cancer cell under a microscope by a pathologist.

Treatment options

Surgery, Surgical excision to remove entire melanoma, it is for the early stage of melanoma and for the resection of an isolated metastatic melanoma site.

Chemotherapy, the use of drug to kill cancer cells. The drugs can be injected into a vein or taken by mouth as a pill and will be given to the patients in cycles. Before beginning the new cycle, patients will have some time to rest to allow body to recover.

Immonotherapy, the use of medicines to help a patient’s own immune system to recognize and destroy cancer cells more effectively.

Targeted therapy, some melanomas are caused by changed in the BRAF gene which signals the melanoma cells to grow and divide quickly. Target therapy then means using medicines to block signals in the cell.
