HbA1c Blood Test

What is the HbA1c?

Prior to health check-up, fasting is often recommended which means not eating or drinking anything except water for at least 6-8 hours and the blood sugar level can indicate how much sugar-containing foods we have consumed in the last couple of days. HbA1c, on the other hand, can tell your average level of blood sugar over the past 2 to 3 months not just a few days before check-up.

The A1C is a blood measures your average blood glucose over the past 2-3 months. If we consume more sugar than the body requires, sugar molecules will enter the red blood cells and stick to hemoglobin. Your hemoglobin A1c test will be then higher.
What is the benefit of HbA1c test?
           -     To diagnose and manage diabetes
           -     To reduce the risk for complications
How to Prepare?
The test can be done without fasting; you do not need to stop eating before you have an HbA1c test.

What does the result mean?
Non-diabetic:  HbA1C below 42 mmol/mol (6.0%)
Prediabetes: HbA1C   between 42 and 47 mmol/mol (6.0–6.4%)
Diabetes: HbA1c of 48 mmol/mol (6.5%) or over
If your Hemoglobin A1c level is high, what should you do?
1. Discuss and work on the appropriate treatment plan with the doctor
2. Physical examination as necessary to prevent complications
3. Get HbA1C testing at least twice a year or as per doctor advice
4. Modify your diet, cut dietary carbohydrate and fat intake
5. Control your weight
6. Do physical activity at least 30 minutes five days a week such as exercising, walking depending your body health
If your blood sugar level is high, it can lead to diabetes and if left untreated, several complications may occur such as heart disease, eye problem; kidney disease, neurological problem, infectious disease and too high blood sugar can cause fainting.
