Hemodialysis

Kidney is a significant organ that keeps your body healthy. It removes liquid waste from the blood in the form of urine and maintains a healthy balance of water, salts, and minerals such as sodium, calcium, phosphorus, and potassium in your blood.

When kidney does not function properly, hemodialysis is necessary to keep body in balance. Hemodialysis usually replaces kidney’s function when its function is left only 10-15 percent. Hemodialysis can help the patient live longer, and can help the patient carry on an active life despite failing kidneys. During hemodialysis, a dialysis nurse place needles that are attached to the tube into patient’s arm to make an access into the blood vessel, the blood go through the tube to the filter where the blood is cleaned by removing some of the waste and extra fluid. Then, the cleaned blood travels through tubes from the dialysis machine back into the body.

Normally, each hemodialysis session lasts about four hours and is done three times per week; the time required for dialysis depends on your kidney’s function, how much waste and fluid builds up in the body and your height and weight. To start hemodialysis; the nephrologist or kidney doctor will discuss with you and consider many factors including your overall health, kidney functions, signs and symptoms as well as your quality of life.

Hemodialysis can improve patient’s lives but it is not a cure for kidney failure. Normally for kidney failure, the patients will need dialysis continuously until they can receive a kidney transplant.
