It is the surgical approach which portions of the hip joint are replaced with artificial joint (implants) without the cut of the muscles or no damage to surrounding muscles. Usually it is a horizontal incision; the skin incision is made within the skin fold of the “bikini line” or frontal groin crease. This approach has advantages over traditional hip surgery that the incision is vertical with reducing blood loss. It helps patients recover faster, patients start walking sooner with minimal pain. The patient stays at the hospital only 2-3 nights and then returns home. It also makes the scar less visible. The bikini incision approach is different from the traditional hip surgery that use posterior and lateral approach and the muscles surrounding hip joint are removed. The muscles cut affect the patient’s recovery with slower recovery time and increasing pain after the surgery. Posterior and lateral approach also increase the risk of dislocation that is, when the implant moves out of place.
