Advanced 3D Laparoscopic Surgery

Although laparoscopic surgery with two-dimensional (2D) visual system has high quality and produce satisfactory outcome, recent medical development which intends to bring patient life back to normal as much as possible  have made laparoscopic surgery better performance.  2D imaging system becomes 3D visualization which can display images in three dimensions (width, length, and depth), provide better view of images and hence make the treatment of various diseases possible.

 

 

The function of 3D visual system is similar to 2D one, so patient preparation before the surgery is not much different. However, the surgeon has to wear 3D glasses as same as watching 3D movie for a true perception of depth.  On the abdominal area, 3-4 incisions will be made with each has 0.5-1 cm in size. Following that, an endoscope with a special instrument is inserted to remove abnormal tissue in the body, the endoscopic images are projected onto a monitor, and the surgeon needs to wear 3D glasses during the surgical process to view the images from the monitor. 3D surgical system has an ability to produce images in full HD level and Live-broadcast surgery to the conference room can be done to educate medical students and other specialists in real-time 3D, providing a chance to discuss the surgery as well as improve the future surgery. The audience must also wear 3D glasses.

 

 

3D laparoscopic surgery is considered as an essential technology in medical industry as it is the surgical procedure that benefits the patient in term of offering clear images. In the past, 2D laparoscopic surgery only provides a perception in width and length but not in depth, therefore, when the surgery is delicate or done on the complex part of the body, the mistakes might occur.

 

 

Not every patient can undergo 3D Laparoscopic Surgery since the procedure has limitations such as patients with heart diseases. They cannot undergo 3D laparoscopic surgery as some gas will continuously be injected through the cut to 'sblow out's the abdominal wall. Patients whose coronary arteries can be easily blocked; that is, a patient with the history of blockage of the coronary arteries or fatty deposit in the artery walls. Of course, to blow out the abdominal wall can increase the risk of the blockage on these patients.

 

 

Besides, patients who have a tumor larger than 24 centimeter, a cancer beyond stage 2 or cervical cancer over 16 weeks  or 4 months also cannot be treated by 3D laparoscopic surgery because the larger the tumor is, the more complicated of the surgery and the higher risk of complications are. Patients with bleeding disorder or genetic disorder are also not advised to undergo 3D Laparoscopic Surgery. Nevertheless, these limitations will depend on physician experiences on the procedure.
