Allergy

Allergy is the condition referred to when a patient is allergic to a particular substance which could come from foods, medicines, dust mite, fungi or cockroaches; causing the health problems: chronic cold, sinusitis, rhinitis, eyelid inflammation, and asthma. Allergy can occur in both children and adults. Some patients experience food allergies or drug allergies which most symptoms are harmless but can affect patient’s quality of life.
Causes of Allergy.

Allergy is caused by many reasons, such as family history. If the father or mother has an allergy problem, children have a higher chance of developing allergies. Continuous exposure to allergens can lead to the disease; people who never have an allergy before or never realize that they have allergy end up having symptoms such as cold, and sinusitis etc.

Allergy Tests
Currently, there are two methods for allergy testing: skin test and blood test.

1.Skin allergy test - this test method has been used for a long time and it becomes the most common approach due to its reasonable price and fast result. The test involves a drop of the allergy-provoking substance on the skin followed by a quick needle prick in the skin underneath each drop. After waiting for 20 minutes, if the skin on tested area becomes red, and swell, it can indicate an allergen that the patient is allergic to.

2.Blood tests – It is also a test to detect an allergy to a particular substance but it take a longer time to process result, and the cost is higher than skin test which the patient has to wait for the lab result approximately 1-2 weeks
The importance of allergy test.

In general, when a person has an allergy, they prefer taking the antihistamines to relieve symptoms of allergies. Taking the medicine does not solve real problem as the root cause is not known. The patient should know what kinds of substances cause allergic reactions such as pollen, wool, dust mite, food, medicines or insects so that they can avoid exposure to such allergens and have the right treatment. Besides, this also helps control the symptoms.

In some cases, the patients may have acute allergic reaction to insect bites but they do not realize that they are allergic to insects. In the normal reaction to bee, wasps or hornets sting, the skin is a little swelling and painful but for people who have an insect sting allergy, they will have severe symptoms which can even lead to death if not receiving the prompt treatment.

Allergy test or examination is like a personal life coach telling what you should avoid and learn to better improve your health. Although after the allergy test, the result may show that you are not allergic to anything, it is still useful to know that you have lower risk compared to others and let you enjoy your life.
