Advanced Transvaginal Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy

If you are women aged over 40 years old, prefer fatty, high calorie food, eat less fruits and fewer vegetables, and have high cholesterol level, then you will have a greater risk of developing gallstones than others.

Let’s check whether you have experienced this systomps before?

    -    Abdominal bloating, indigestion, heartburn, excessive gas
    -    Abdominal pain that is more noticeable especially after having a fatty or greasy food.
    -    Nausea and Vomiting
    -    Pain in the right upper abdomen which lasts from 15 minutes until several hours.
The pain may also extend beneath the right shoulder blade.

Gallstones may not cause any symptoms but when you do health-check-up, it turns out that you have gallstones and you do not want to undergo the surgery because you do not want to have the scar on your belly.

Transvaginal Cholecystectomy –Scarless technique
Though a small scar is left after the surgery, it would be even better for most women if none of the scar is shown following the surgery like Cholecystectomy. Dr.Angkoon Anuwong, Laparoscopic Surgery Specialist at Phyathai 2 Hospital is the first surgeon in Thailand who has brought the technique “Transvaginal Cholecystectomy” to treat patients and improve the technique to be more easily.

“Firstly, the surgeon will make a small cut about 0.5 cm long near to the belly button (navel) and some carbon dioxide gas is passed into the abdomen through the cut, after that the camera and the instruments are then introduced through the vagina to remove gallbladder. The operation takes around 40 minutes which is similar to general laparoscopic surgery. Following the surgery, patient hardly experiences post-operative discomfort, earlier returns to their normal lives with much smaller scars.  In some patients such as those has acute Cholecystitis or the severe inflammation of the gallbladder, Transvaginal Cholecystectomy may not be suitable, as well as in case of men, the alternative will be Transabdominal Laparoscopic Surgery” said Dr.Angkoon Anuwong.

How Transvaginal Cholecystectomy –Scarless technique is better than other approaches?
The traditional approach surgery will leave a scar (5-10 cm.) on the patient with more post-operative discomfort and longer hospital stays.  In addition, a weakness in the muscles of the abdominal wall or an incompletely-healed surgical wound can also causes hernia at the incision site in some patients.  Later, gallbladder removal by laparoscopic surgery is developed and commonly used which is regard as medical treatment standard worldwide. The benefit of this approach includes considerably less post-operative pain and quicker recovery times. A scar left at the navel is only about 1-2 cm and about 0.5 cm. left at the abdomen. Besides, in the long run, only 10% of the patient has hernia which is usually a as a result of improper suture of past surgical incisions.

All in all, Transvaginal Cholecystectomy can help patient have better quality of life since the patient seldom feel painful after the surgery, and increase their confidence due to less obvious scar. So, this technique focuses on women who are mostly concerned about the scar.
