ECCE involves a larger incision to remove the cloudy lens in one piece. It's often used for advanced cataracts or when Phaco isn't suitable. Recovery takes longer, typically a few weeks, due to the larger incision

The ECCE procedure:

Incision: The surgeon makes a larger incision in the cornea.

Lens Removal: The front part of the lens capsule is removed, and the cloudy lens is carefully extracted in one piece.   

IOL Implantation: An artificial lens, called an intraocular lens (IOL), is placed inside the eye to replace the focusing power of the natural lens.  
Closure: The incision is closed with sutures.  

ECCE is a safe and effective procedure, but it has some drawbacks compared to newer techniques like phacoemulsification. The larger incision in ECCE means that recovery time is longer, and there is a higher risk of complications such as astigmatism.  

While ECCE was once the standard procedure for cataract surgery, it is now less common due to the development of phacoemulsification, which uses a smaller incision and has a faster recovery time. However, ECCE may still be used in certain situations, such as when the cataract is very dense or when other eye conditions make phacoemulsification difficult.
