pH monitoring and manometry are diagnostic tests used to evaluate esophageal function and acid reflux, it is performed as an out-patient basis
pH Monitoring (Esophageal pH Test)
Purpose: Measures acid reflux from the stomach into the esophagus over a 24-48 hour period.
Esophageal Manometry
Purpose: Measures the strength, coordination, and pressure of esophageal muscles and the lower esophageal sphincter (LES).
Why are these tests done together?
These tests are often done together because they give your doctor a complete picture of how your esophagus is working.
They can help diagnose problems like:
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- Difficulty swallowing
- Chest pain that is not caused by heart problems
If you are having problems with heartburn, chest pain, or difficulty swallowing, your doctor may recommend these tests.
