Do not wait around if your shoulder hurts. You might be at risk of shoulder osteoarthritis

The glenohumeral joint is made up of the head of humerus, which has a convex shape, and the glenoid, which has a concave shape. The degrees of curvature of both bones are very different. As a result, the stability of the shoulder joints primarily rely on surrounding tissues and tendons, and their tears can lead to shoulder osteoarthritis.

Rotator cuff tendon is a cause of shoulder osteoarthritis!
The rotator cuff is a group of 4 tendons and related muscles that form a cuff at the shoulder joint where the humerus meets the scapula, and they are important. They work together to lift and rotate the shoulder joints in addition to providing stability for the balanced movements of the shoulder joints, and the humerus is attached to the center of the glenoid.

Whenever there is a massive rotator cuff tear or dysfunction, when you lift the arm, the deltoid muscle will pull the humerus upward and to not remain at the center of the socket. As a result, there can be grinding of humerus against the upper part of the socket and the acromion.

As a result, patients with massive rotator cuff tear experience pain at specific points when lifting the shoulders in the initial stages. Then, as the tear becomes more severe, loss of balance, followed by fatigue and inability to raise the shoulders will eventually occur, thus ultimately causing shoulder osteoarthritis.

Indications of Shoulder Osteoarthritis

1. Pain is the most obvious symptom. Pain usually occurs when moving the shoulder, e.g., when lifting the arm, extending the arm, rotating the arm, etc. With greater degeneration of the joint, pain will occur even when remaining still.
2. Reduced joint mobility or locked shoulder joint. You will be unable to extend the shoulder as far as ordinary people. For example, you might be unable to comb your hair or grab objects from the shelves, etc. Locked shoulders frequently occurs when the shoulders haven’t been moved from a long time. For example, we often discover that our shoulders are locked after waking up.
3. Muscle weakness. With degeneration of the joint and reduced movements, the surrounding muscles will become atrophied and weak.
4. Sounds in the shoulder joint. You might experience sounds when moving the shoulder joint.

Treatments for Shoulder Osteoarthritis
The doctor will talk to the patient to determine whether the patient has indications for surgery. If surgery is not necessary, the patient should strictly follow the doctor’s instructions such as by avoiding sports that create risk for additional injuries, while possibly pursuing physical therapy and muscle training at the time in order to maintain one’s own muscle mass, primarily depending on the doctor’s diagnosis and the patient’s symptoms.
