Exercise can prevent osteoporosis

Even though osteoporosis is a very common disease in older people, the World Health Organization reports that the number of osteoporosis patients is increasing worldwide while being younger and younger. So, if you have frequent back pain, hip pain, waist pain or knee pain, checking your bone mass before getting old, and regular exercising, can help prevent you from developing osteoporosis in the future!

When bone mass decreases, you have risk of developing osteoporosis.
This is because bones are strong and flexible and has the capability to withstand pressure and impacts, but osteoporosis is a condition when your bone mass and bone mineral density decreases, which makes your bones weaker as a result. Normally, bone density peaks at around 30 years of age before gradually decreasing, leading to greater risk of osteoporosis in older people.

Which groups of people should not wait (until older) before receiving a bone density check-up?
People who are not very old but engage in bone-damaging activities such as people who consume alcohol, smoke, have excessively low body weight, do not like to exercise, or use certain medications such as steroids, anti-clotting medications or diabetes medications do not have to wait until they are older before going for a bone density check-up to determine their future risk of developing osteoporosis.

You can increase bone mass through exercise!
1. Weight-bearing exercises or exercises that involve use of feet and legs or hands and arms to bear your own body weight, such as aerobic dancing, soccer, basketball, badminton, running or walking are exercise techniques that do not only strengthen your bones but are also beneficial to your cardiovascular system.

2. Strengthening / resistance exercise or exercise by resisting your own body weight or resistance in combination with external resistance or weight such as weight training that we commonly see in gyms is an exercise method that promotes maximum bone function and can increase bone mass more effectively than the first method. However, this type of exercise might be more suitable to young people or working age people than elderly people.

Because osteoporosis is a silent danger that can happen to us without our knowledge, before exercising, especially strength training exercises like weight training, you might have to receive a bone density check-up first in order to determine the most suitable exercise techniques that will contribute the most to the strength of your bones.
