Platelet rich plasma injections to treat diseases of orthopedics problem

Perhaps we have seen pictures of Roman-era warriors using needles to puncture or pierce sites of injury to treat symptoms before. Similarly, today we have adopted this technique to treat diseases of the bones and joints, called the “Platelet-rich plasma injections”. So, what are the benefits and limitations of this treatment method? We have the answer!

What is plasma?
After removing about 10-15 CCs of blood from a patient, blood is placed a centrifuge that runs at high speed to separate the fluid into layers in order to remove unwanted red blood cells and obtain only the plasma and platelets, which help repair and restore the body. The concentration of these repair substances can be as much as 10-25 times greater than normal blood. However, this depends on the physical condition, age and health of each person.

The advantages of this technique are…
Reduction of risk of contagious blood diseases, and, by using your own plasma, you can avoid use of anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and steroids, so you can avoid impacts on your stomach, intestines and kidneys. As a result, you can receive this treatment multiple times.

Important Precautions to Never Neglect
Because this treatment method involves the injection of a substance into your body, it can cause swelling at the site of treatment. This can be alleviated by applying cold compress for 48 hours or for about 1-2 days.

People who suffer from blood disorders, low platelets, immune system disorders, gout and blood infections are likely unsuitable for this treatment.

In order to prevent risk of disease contamination and ensure a high level of safety, aseptic techniques are required.

Which patients should receive this treatment?
1.  Athletes or patients who suffer from tendon injuries or muscle tears.

2. Patients suffering from injuries of the spinal vertebrae, including inflammation or degeneration of the vertebrae at the neck, hip or chest, which are known as facet joints.

3. Patients with muscle symptoms and fibrosis or dystonia with chronic pain, especially in the neck, shoulders and hip, etc.

4. Chronic muscle injury that is not fully cured after undergoing standard treatment methods with pain symptoms recurring intermittently.

Although this treatment method requires time, and it does not provide an instant cure like steroid anti-inflammatory drug injection, this is actually a benefit, because it means that doctors can reduce unnecessary use of anti-inflammatory drugs in patients. Moreover, this treatment method provides another option to accompany standard treatment methods, but it needs to be performed under the supervision of a skilled physician only.
