Stroke in the young

Although stroke is frequently found in the elderly and the incidence increases with age which the risk factors include diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia and smoking, the stroke can also occur in people aged below 45 years accounting for approximately 5 percent of stroke patients. This is referred as stroke in the young which there are various causes of stroke compared to the older people.
 
The reasons behind stroke in the young often related to people with underlying diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, smokers, people who lack of exercise, people with stress condition and obesity which can be divided into three main causes:
 
1.Heart abnormality:
-  Heart structure abnormality, one problem that is often found is patent foramen ovale
-  Atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, heart block
2. Abnormal blood vessel
-  Vasculopathy such as Moyamoya disease and Premature atherosclerosis
-  Vasculitis which is often come from autoimmune disease such as SLE
3. Hypercoagulable state which is often associated with autoimmune disease or cancer

The symptoms of stroke in the young are the same as general stroke which the warning signs are as follows:
 
B = Balance: Trouble walking, dizziness, vertigo
E = Eyes: Blurry vision, loss of vision, double vision
F = Face Drooping: Facial numbness, the corner of the lips droop when smiling
A = Arm Weakness: Weakness on one of the arms and inability to make a fist
S = Speech difficulty: Lip contortions, slurred speech, speech difficulty, inability to speak, loss of ability to speak.  
T =Time to call: Immediately notify hospital personnel to transport the patient to the hospital.  
 
The treatment of stroke varies depending on the cause and severity of the disease. The important thing in the treatment of stroke in the young is to find the detailed cause quickly and comprehensively by specialist to reduce the chance of having disability and death.
 
The prevention of stroke in working age group is as below:
- Measure the blood pressure regularly and control the blood pressure to be in the normal range
- Control the weight to be in the normal range, if it exceeds the normal range, lose some weight
- Exercise regularly
- Choose the food to eat by reduce the food with high cholesterol or high saturated fat and eat more vegetables and fruits
- Reduce alcohol consumption
- Avoid smoking and using drug
- Have an annual check-up
